About a New Brand GENPEI
2024年の始まりとともに、柴田慶信商店は新ブランド《源平》を始動させます。
源平とは、赤太（心材）と白太（辺材）が混じる材料のことを呼びます。2色の材のならびが、赤い幟を掲げる源氏と、白い幟の平氏が対抗した源平合戦を想起させることが由来です。
With the beginning of 2024, Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten is launching a new brand, GENPEI.
GENPEI refers to materials where red heartwood (inner wood) and white sapwood (outer wood) are mixed. The arrangement of these two colors is reminiscent of the Genpei War, where the red banners of the Genji clan and the white banners of the Heike clan faced off.
自然の恵みを有用に
Harnessing Nature's Bounty
白太は水に弱い、赤太よりも抗菌性に乏しいという短所ゆえ、大館曲げわっぱ製作の現場では、端材とされる場面が多かったのが実情です。しかしながら、白太は樹齢の高い天然杉からいただいた、自然の恵み。柴田慶信商店ではこれまでにも、臍帯箱や箸、折敷の材料として、白太材の活用を試みてまいりました。
White sapwood, with its vulnerability to water and with poor antimicrobial nature compared to red heartwood, has often been relegated to scrap material in the Odate magewappa production. However, white sapwood is a gift from aged natural cedar, a blessings of nature. Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten has previously experimented with utilizing white sapwood for items such as umbilical cord boxes, chopsticks, and OSHIKI.

次世代につなげるものづくりを続けるために、私たちが行き着いた解決方法は、天然の塗料である漆塗装です。用途に合わせ、複数回の漆塗装を施すことで、白太材の耐水性や抗菌性は格段に向上します。数ある伝統的な塗装技法から、杉の優美な柾目を生かした拭き漆仕上げを選びました。
In our pursuit of sustainable craftsmanship for the next generation, we have found a solution in the use of natural lacquer coating. Tailoring the application to specific purposes and applying multiple layers significantly enhances the water resistance and antibacterial white sapwood. Choosing a wipe lacquer finish that showcases the elegant grain of cedar, we have opted for a technique that accentuates the vividness of various lacquer colors on the highly absorbent and the milk-like brightness of white sapwood.

Exploring the Potential of magewappa
弁当箱やおひつなどの定番品には、主材料として赤太のみを使用してきましたが、混じりがなく、節目のない材料を厳選することで、作るもののサイズが自然と限定されることもありました。混合材を使うことで、寸法の大きな製品を作る可能性が広がります。
While classic items like bento boxes and OHITSU have traditionally relied solely on red heartwood as the primary material, the absence of mixing and the lack of knots in the material have sometimes naturally limited the size of these products. By incorporating mixed materials, the potential to create larger-sized items expands, introducing new dimensions and possibilities.

源平仕上げの、container (box +tray)
Introducing a new product featuring the GENPEI finish—the container (box + tray).
源平仕上げの新たな商品としてデザインしたのが、container (box +tray) です。曲げ輪（蓋と本体の側面）には白太と赤太の混合材を、底板には白太の集成材を使って木地を作りました。内側、外側に5回ずつ拭き漆塗装をしています。
Crafted with a blend of white sapwood and red heartwood for the bentwood rings (lid and side), and with laminated white sapwood for the base, the result is a versatile wooden structure. The interior and exterior are meticulously coated with wipe lacquer, applied five times each.
現在、柴田慶信商店の商品は、食器を中心に展開しております。暮らしが豊かになるようにと、お客様の声を聞きながら、近年は家庭や公共空間に使用出来る曲げわっぱの可能性も模索してまいりました。大きく舵を切るきっかけになったのは、新型コロナの拡大です。行動や習慣への制約が余儀なくされる中、日常生活と居住空間が、心地良く感じられるものを作ることに自然と目が向きました。
Currently, Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten focuses on dishware in its product lineup. Listening to customer feedback and aiming to enrich daily life, in recent years the shop has been exploring the potential of magewappa for use in homes and public spaces. The catalyst for this significant shift was the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. With constraints on behavior and habits becoming unavoidable, public attention naturally turned towards creating items that make everyday life and living spaces more comfortable.
containerはbox（本体）とtray（蓋）の単体で使用することも出来ます。boxには衣料品や玩具、保存食品を。trayはテーブルウェアとして。大切なものを仕舞うcontainerは収納に役立ち、漆が浮かび上がらせる浮造り仕上げが目を惹きます。ご家庭だけではなく、店舗や公共空間でも使っていただきたい曲げわっぱです。
Comprising both the box (main body) and the tray (lid), the container can be used independently. The box is ideal for storing clothing, toys, or preserved foods, while the tray serves perfectly as tableware. This versatile container, designed for storing cherished items, not only aids in organization, it also captivates with its raised lacquer finish. Intended for use not only in homes but also in stores and public spaces, these magewappa containers offer both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
