熊谷晃氏が講師となり、漆塗装の講習会を数回にわたり実施。伝統工芸士の柴田昌正を筆頭とした作り手が、拭き漆塗装の手順から、木地の補修・補強方法まで、伝統的な漆芸技術を得る機会となりました。

A series of lacquer coating workshops were held, with Kou Kumagai as the instructor of Akita University of Art. Led by traditional craftsman Yoshimasa Shibata, makers had the opportunity to learn traditional lacquering techniques, from the steps of wiping lacquer coating to the methods of wood repair and reinforcement.

柴田慶信商店の新製品「源平」シリーズは、「自然との共生」という考え方が根本にあり、長年のものづくりの取り組みから誕生した、新しい提案である。その製品は、秋田杉の芯材と辺材を余すところなく使い切り、素材の特性や魅力を引き出し、生活者の視点で開発された優品に仕上がっている。

The new GENPEI series from Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten embodies the fundamental philosophy of coexistence with nature, emerging from years of dedicated craftsmanship. This innovative proposal utilizes every part of Akita cedar, both the core and sapwood, bringing out the unique characteristics and charm of the material. Developed with a consumer-centric approach, these high-quality products showcase a harmonious blend of functionality and the innate beauty of the wood.

源平シリーズ誕生

The Birth of the GENPEI Series from Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten

この製品を生み出した秋田県北地域は、豊かな森林資源である白神山地を背景に、鉱山資源にも恵まれ、北前船による米代川の川運で栄えた地域である。この自然の恵みに感謝し、曲げわっぱの作り手達が木地制作の知見を元に、「漆塗装」という新たな技術を習得する機会を得た。それは、秋田杉のきめ細やかな杢目を、丈夫に長持ちさせる表現力に繋がり、この技術を身につけたことは、大きな財産になるであろう。

The northern region of Akita Prefecture, set against the backdrop of the abundant Shirakami Mountains and blessed with mining resources, flourished through the river transport of the Yoneshiro River during the Kitamae Ship trade era. Grateful for the blessings of nature, the craftsmen of magewappa, with their expertise in woodworking, seized the opportunity to acquire a new skill—lacquer coating. This skill enhances the fine grain of Akita cedar, making it more durable. Mastering this technique is considered a valuable asset.

漆塗装は、木地を保護するだけではなく、使い続けると表面の艶が変化するなど経年変化が楽しめ、古くなれば塗り直しができ、環境にも優しい自然塗料である。「源平」シリーズは、生漆と黒や赤、緑の色漆も使用し、それぞれが表情を持つ完成品となった。生漆は漆の木から採取した樹液そのもので、大地の恵みを表していると言える。また、「黒」の漆塗装は、峻厳とした冬の空気を感じさせ、「赤」は生命や実り、収穫の喜びを、「緑」は春の到来を待ち望んだ、植物の芽吹きのイメージを纏っている。新製品の「源平」シリーズの色彩から、秋田の四季の豊かさを、感じ取ってほしい。

Lacquer coating not only protects the wood, it also offers the enjoyment of surface luster changes with prolonged use. It can be refreshed when aged. It is also an environmentally friendly natural coating. The GENPEI series utilizes raw lacquer as well as black, red, and green colored lacquers, each contributing to the distinct character of the finished product. Raw lacquer is derived directly from the sap of lacquer trees, symbolizing the blessings of the earth. The black lacquer finish evokes the solemnity of winter air, red represents life, abundance, and the joy of harvest, while green embodies the anticipation of spring with the image of budding plants. Through the color palette of the new Genpei series, we invite you to experience the richness of Akita's four seasons.

さらに、新しい表現力を持った柴田慶信商店は、曲げわっぱの未来を牽引する工房であり、ものづくりの楽しさ、素晴らしさ、大変さも含んだ、やり甲斐を発信し続けている。自然に向き合い、ものづくりに向き合い、素材と対話し続けている作り手達と、共に仕事ができる喜びを感じると同時に、「源平」シリーズが誕生する、その瞬間に立ち会えたことを私は誇らしく思う。

Furthermore, Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten, with its innovative approach to magewappa, serves as a leading workshop shaping the future of magewappa. We continue to share the joys, wonders, and challenges of craftsmanship as well as engaging with nature and materials in an ongoing dialogue. Witnessing the birth of the GENPEI series, we take pride in being part of a moment that aligns with the artisans who face nature and craftsmanship with dedication.

プロフィール

About Kou Kumagai

1971年神奈川生まれ。東京藝術大学大学院漆芸専攻修了後に、岩手県安代町漆器センターにて、漆上塗り、漆精製、漆器製造などを学ぶ。2002年秋田公立美術工芸短期大学講師。2022年秋田公立美術大学教授、現在に至る。

日本伝統工芸展への出品を主たる活動とし、秋田県伝統的工芸品産業振興委員を務める。社会貢献活動として、秋田刑務所漆科職業訓練指導を15年以上継続する。

Kou Kumagai was born in Kanagawa in 1971. After completing the Lacquer Art program at the Tokyo University of the Arts, he studied lacquer application, lacquer refining, and lacquerware production at the Ashiro Lacquerware Center in Iwate Prefecture. He became a lecturer at the Akita Public University of Art and Crafts in 2002. Appointed as a professor at Akita Public University of Art in 2022, this is a position he has held to the present.

Primarily engaged in exhibiting at the Japan Kōgei Exhibition, Kumagai is also serving as a member of the Akita Prefecture Traditional Craft Industry Promotion Committee. He engages in social contribution activities and has been providing vocational training guidance in lacquer art at the Akita Prison for over 15 years.
